Newgate Market
York once had many markets for different products scattered around
the city, but since Victorian times Newgate Market has served the
city. It was first in Pavement, moving to Parliament Street and
St Sampson`s Square for 127 years, before moving to the specially
created site next to the Shambles in 1964.
Set against a backdrop of medieval buildings, it offers something
for almost everyone. At least once a year a market must be held in
Parliament Street to retain the ancient Charter granted to hold a
market. There is usually a summer market dominated by charities, and
the winter St Nicholas Fayre held four weeks before Christmas.
